Mental Health Wellbeing
In today's world, it can feel like an uphill battle maintaining mental wellbeing. With the majority of society seemingly pursuing fame, fortune, social media status and other materialistic endeavours. Sometimes it can feel like pressure, sometimes it can feel like you are just constantly comparing yourself to others and not quite fitting the bill.
The feeling of being overwhelmed can hit you in all areas of life, work, family, financial, fitness and socially.
Understanding Mental Resilience
Mental resilience refers to the ability to adapt to stress, adversity, and challenges. It is not about avoiding difficulties but rather about developing the skills to cope with them effectively. Building mental resilience can lead to improved emotional well-being, better decision-making, and enhanced performance in various aspects of life.
Key Components of Mental Resilience
-
Self-Awareness: Understanding your emotions, strengths, and weaknesses. Its good practice to be aware of your character 'pros' and 'cons'. Understanding when you are being absorbed by your character 'defects' and zoning in on your characters 'assets'. Coming out of self pity, and attaching yourself to something you are good at, such as helping others or organizing a project.
-
Emotional Regulation: Managing your emotions in a healthy way, taking time to identify what you are feeling and why. Making sure to mend the people that are involved or have been effected by your emotional reactions. Taking time to pause and take control of your mental state, and do something proactive about it.
-
Optimism: Maintaining a positive outlook even in tough situations. Living in gratitude for what you have and can do, rather than thinking about what you don't have and cant do.
-
Problem-Solving Skills: Developing strategies to tackle challenges. Compartmentalising, narrowing down your life challenges into urgent/non urgent, making to do lists and keeping a diary to stay organized.
-
Social Support: Building a network of supportive relationships. This can be in recovery groups, fitness spaces, church, local groups, family & school communities.
Benefits of Mental Resilience
-
Improved Stress Management: Resilient individuals can handle stress more effectively.
-
Enhanced Performance: Resilience contributes to better performance in work and personal life.
-
Greater Life Satisfaction: Individuals with high resilience often report higher levels of happiness.
The Role of Fitness in Mental Resilience
Physical fitness plays a crucial role in enhancing mental resilience. Regular exercise has been shown to reduce symptoms of anxiety and depression, improve mood, and boost overall mental health. Engaging in physical activity releases endorphins, which are natural mood lifters.
